Berlin versus Finland

---Alhaalla suomeksi---

Hi guys!

I can't believe I've lived in Berlin for almost three years! Time has passed so fast. I have to admit that when I first moved here I wasn't sure at all if I'd like it here. Berlin is not exactly the prettiest city in Europe. Luckily I soon learnt to love Berlin and it started to feel like home.

The other day I came to think of the differences of living in Germany, or in Berlin as I see Berlin has completely a culture of its own, versus living in Finland. This is actually a topic that me and my Finnish or Nordic friends here never get tired of talking about.

Here's some of the differences.

  • Sauna. Oh god, where should I even begin with this one! Finns take pride of their sauna culture and therefore this is one of the biggest things I'll never get used to. In Berlin women and men go naked in the same sauna. In Finland you normally go naked only with the same gender. In Berlin people also lie down in the public saunas and it is VERY important that none of your body parts touches the wood over your towel. Not your feet, nothing. Also you cannot throw the water yourself. You push a button to get a deciliter of water on the hot stones. In Finland sauna is a place for relaxation and meditation. Not so much in here. You set an hourglass to 15 minutes and you don't leave before that. Here you are not allowed to drink water in sauna. You should be dry when you go to in. And don't you DARE to forget to wear your slippers!!
  • Opening hours. The shops are closed on Sundays in Berlin! This is a good reason to order home delivery though. Then again, the clubs are open pretty much around the clock. In Finland the clubs have to close at 03:30 for legal reasons.
  • Fashion. Soooo much more relaxed in Berlin than in Finland. You don't dress up when you go out here. Actually, you don't get in to the coolest clubs if you wear high heels. We also wear very casual clothes in the office. I don't know if I can walk in heels anymore. People here also have quite bold styles. Okay hipsters look exactly the same here as in Helsinki. Or maybe they are a bit more neat in Helsinki but still. New bikes and all.
  • Free time. I never lived in Helsinki, so I'm comparing to Vaasa now. In Berlin eating out is so cheap that you can spontaneously go out for a dinner with your friends anytime. You can have your pre-parties in a bar instead of home (and you'd still probably pay more than here in a bar). There's countless of exhibitions, open air parties, gigs and farmers markets happening all the time in Berlin. This is one thing I love about Berlin. The city is changing all the time. New restaurants opening and cool open air concepts experimented (I just read about a whirlpool open air cinema, like, what!?)
  • Fitness. The whole "fitness-fuss" is a bit behind in Berlin. Both in Finland and here I've been a member of women's gym and I saw a big difference. Here they don't have the latest, coolest (weirdest) classes yet. Aerobics and Zumba are going strong. Also this kind of ab-workouts where you do 100 crunches and don't feel a thing are still a thing here. I see women doing treadmill or crosstrainer for 1,5 hour straight. And something unforgivable: The biggest kettlebell is 12 kg.

  • Sauna. Tää on mun henkilökohtainen suosikki näissä eroavaisuuksissa.
  • Aukioloajat. Berliinissä on sunnuntaisin kaupat kiinni! Se on tosin hyvä tekosyy tilata kotiin ruokaa. Valinnanvaraa on vaikka kuinka ja toimitus ilmaista. Klubit onki sitten auki kellon ympäri. Onse hieno tunne tulla kotiin kello 12 aamupäivällä, kun Ben syö keittiössä myöhäistä aamupalaa...
  • Muoti. Bleiskat on jäykistyny käyttämättömyyttään aikoja sitten vaaterekin perukoille. Ihmiset pukeutuu ylipäätään aika rohkeasti täällä. Hipsterit kyl näyttää täälläkin samalta, kuin Helsingissä. Helsingissä ne on ehkä hivenen siistimpiä, mut kuitenki. Uudet fillarit ja silleen.
  • Vapaa-aika. Luin just tapahtumasta "open air whirlpool cinema"...mmmitä?
  • Fitness. Nää kaikki fitness-hömpötykset on tosi jäljessä Berliinissä.

The best Christmas Market in Berlin: Holy Heimat

Hi guys!

Hope you had a lovely weekend! I spent my weekend shopping, eating well and visiting a couple Christmas markets. I also saw the new Paddington movie with Milka - a perfect Sunday movie :D.

These pics, however, are from last weekend when Essi and I visited Holy Heimat Christmas market at Neue Heimat (near Warschauer strasse). The market was the best I've visited so far in Berlin (and I have visited many). It was quite typical "Berlin-style" market. The venue was an old building full of graffiti but the fairy lights made it look all cosy and christmassy ;). They had lots of street food stalls, so unlike at a normal Christmas market here, you could choose anything from whiskey ribs to Korean bibimbab. Not to forget the nice assortment of different cakes and desserts. The ice skating ring and design market were a nice extra! Obviously a DJ was playing some hipstery tunes by the bar.

We also made a note that the people there were pretty. This was after a few glasses of Glühwein though so I'm not sure how reliable this statement is.

And then to the pics.

Christmas crafting: Advent calendar & straw diamonds

Hi guys!

Lately I've been busy with mainly three things: Christmas parties, crafting and being sick. We also celebrated Finland's Independence day with a couple of friends by watching President's party while sipping some sparkling wine and stuffing ourselves with sweets.

Last year I made a "christmas town" advent calendar for my niece with Ben. This year we did something different. Every day Isla will get a card with a picture I d
rew and the name in Finnish and in German ;).

Last year's advent calendar

This years' advent calendar
I've also done some other crafting.. like these diamond ornaments made out of straws. The instruction for the first one is here and for the second one here (unfortunately only in Finnish but the pics explain it pretty well!).

Finally a little sneak peek into our christmas party ;)

Christmas market season has begun!

Hi guys!

I kicked off the Christmas market season! They have to be my favourite thing before Christmas. It's so cozy to sip mulled wine and look for the next food stall to conquer. Offially they start next weekend but a couple of them opened already this weekend. We headed to a Finnish market in Kreuzberg. My homesickness was fully cured with a dose of smoked salmon on a rye bread, salmon soup, glögi (mulled wine), and cinnamon rolls... Obviously I also didn't leave empty handed but I picked up some rye bread and Finnish chocolate to bring me comfort until I get to visit home again ;).

If you're not from Germany I highly recommend to visit during the Christmas market season :).

Let's catch up!

Hi guys!

Yo. I'm back! Here's the extended list of excuses why I haven't blogged:

  1. I went to Finland and fell out of track
  2. I didn't have internet in one month
  3. My computer is slow
  4. Too many ideas to write about
  5. I've spent too much time at gym
  6. The previous one was a lie

Few things have happened while I've been "gone" so let's look back for a bit...

  • We moved! Again... The girl who rented us the previous apartment needed her lovely flat so we looked for a new flat closer to my work in Friedrichchain. I'm not gonna lie; this is not as nice as the previous one was, but oh well, you can't have everything now, can you? It's nice to be closer to work because for a while I was biking 16 km per day to get to work.
  • Ah, a designer sale! I left with a dress and a skirt from Kenzo.
  • I went to see Lady Gaga!

  • I went to Finland! Lovely as always. I got to spend time with lovely Isla. At the end of my stay we planned Christmas holidays in Gran Canaria with my family.
  • In Finland I went horseback riding. Haven't done it in years! Loved it!

  • I've been on a mostly-vegetarian diet pretty much the whole year... In October there is a "meatless October" campaign in Finland. Ironically I was craving more meat than ever in October. Was it the autumn doing its tricks for me? I don't know but I cooked everything from meatballs to cabbage casserole (traditional Finnish dish).
  • I got a new phone! The first thing I did? I joined Instagram! Follow me ;) (maikkoo0)
  • I've been building my new vision board, although in the form of a book this time (easier to transport you see ;) ) I also took part in manifesting workshop organized by Clare from Woodward institute. Feeling all inspired now ;)

  • We had a nice team event at Teufelsberg ("devil's mountain")which is an artificial hill with an old spying station that was built after the second world war. We got to golf there. One of the "in Berlin only" -experiences.

The breakfast market: every breakkie lovers daydream!

Hi guys!

What an eventful weekend I had!

On Friday we had a little office party at work and later that night Ben and I got some friends over. Saturday started with a lovely brunch, where else than at Zuckerfree. Afterwards I headed to the opening party of e3 -gym that has a new interesting concept of concentrating on holistic health; mind, body and energy! If you're thinking of joining a gym in Berlin, I recommend you to check them out! They had interesting presentations and the most delicious raw food. In the evening we celebrated Fanny's birthday and we had so much fun!

Sunday's highlight was the breakfast market at Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg. The idea is that people can buy their breakfast there from different street-food stalls. They have everything from green juices to Korean porridge to all-time breakfast classics, like pancakes and eggs benedict. You gotta love whoever came up with this idea. I was truly in a very happy mindset while hunting down the most delicious-looking options.

Ben had a toast with buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes and I had nachos with guacamole. And green juice. And samosa chaat (an Indian street food treat). And a cake. Oh well.

Fast and healthy burrito, baby!

Hi guys!

I was craving for comfort food today and decided to create a healthy version of burrito. I pretty much just improvised but it turned out to be really good! This is an easy dish to optimize (a natural choice of word for an email marketer...) to a healthier version. The bad brother of my version is pretty naughty with all its cheese. I decided to share this idea with you as a "foodspiration".

For my burrito-baby I used:

Gluten-free tortillas
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Tabasco
Home made chili salsa
A lot of home made guacamole (without cream cheese)
White beans
Boiled brown rice
Fresh coriander
Red onion

Salad on the side

Just pile everything on top of the tortillas and pop it in the oven for about 10 minutes until they warm up a bit. As usual I overestimated my hunger and thought I could eat two of these bad boys but no, one was enough!

Before the oven
Talking about burritos... I tested with a couple of friends a burrito place at Neukölln called Burrito Baby. They had vegan options as well (or maybe all of them were?). The burritos were massive and _so_gooood_. You might explode but I'd still recommend taking the nachos as a starter because WHY NOT (what I really wanted to say is: YOLO)!

Massive burrito at Burrito Baby

I recommend...

Hi guys!

There are many things I've tried recently and I think you should try them as well.

Here we go.

I recommend...

Sunday brunch with friends. Everybody brings something, you get yourself way too full, then go on talking about everything under the sun., until you feel like you can have a third piece of cake.

Frozen yogurt... especially Yoli in Berlin. You get to choose as many toppings as they can fit in the cup. And oh how they try to fit as many as possible to please you. Bless them.

Nail polish with sprinkles. Thanks to the sprinkles you get nice looking nails while balancing both your laptop and the nail polish bottle on your belly and watching Big Bang Theory at the same time. Blindfolded. Okay not the last one but the it was dark.

Balancing things on your belly brings me to recommending to see the bright side of things. See, the balancing wouldn't be as easy on the abs I was expecting to have around this time. All stiff an uneven as abs are.

The nail polish is Like "Sweets way" from nails inc.
Let it be. Or don't. "Let it be" is the new vegan café at Neukölln. They serve sweet and salty crepes, sandwiches, cakes and hamburgers.

Sales. It's on baby!! My sale shopping was spontaneous and rewarding. I was mainly excited about the sales at Sandro, my favourite shop.

Sandro, Sandro, Filippa K + the necklace 2nd hand
World Press Photo exhibition. It features the award-winning photographs from the World Press Photo Contest for press photography. This gives a good overview for what happened in 2013. Although most of the images are quite shocking and sad... You can see it in over 40 countries. It's on now in Berlin at Willy-Brandt-haus in Kreuzberg until July 3rd.

Trying out plant based diet. This has been on my mind for a while and after so many people recommended it to me, I finally rented "Forks over knives" from iTunes. It's a documentary that explains in a pretty convincing way why you should eat plant based diet... for your health, all the ethical matters being a good side effect of it.
